What Documents Do You Need to Sell a Car in NSW?
Delta Auto Group · 16 October 2026
Selling a car in NSW is straightforward once you know the paperwork. Whether you sell privately or to a dealer, this checklist covers every document you'll need — and a few that make the process faster and get you a better price.
The essentials
These are the documents you must have:
- Registration papers (certificate of registration) — proves the car is registered to you
- Proof of identity — your NSW driver licence or photo card
- Number plate and registration details — needed for any vehicle lookup or transfer
Notice of disposal
After the sale, you must lodge a notice of disposal with Service NSW. This tells Transport for NSW you're no longer the owner and protects you from the new owner's fines and tolls. You can lodge it online through your MyServiceNSW account in minutes — do it the day the car leaves your hands.
When you sell to a licensed dealer like Delta Auto Group, the transfer paperwork is handled for you as part of the sale.
If there's finance owing
If the car is under finance, you'll need a payout figure from your lender. The car can still be sold — the lender is paid out from the sale proceeds and you receive the balance. Buyers (and dealers) will run a PPSR check to confirm whether money is owing, so be upfront about it.
Documents that add value (but aren't required)
You don't need these to sell, but they help your price:
- Logbook and service history — proof the car has been maintained
- Receipts for recent work — tyres, brakes, battery, timing belt
- Both sets of keys — replacement keys are expensive
- Owner's manual
- Current eSafety check (pink slip) if the car is over five years old
What you don't need in NSW
Unlike some states, NSW does not require a roadworthy certificate to sell a registered car. You also don't need to provide a PPSR certificate yourself, though offering one can build buyer confidence in a private sale.
The easy way
When you sell to Delta Auto Group, bring your licence and rego details and we handle the rest — including the transfer and any finance payout. Enter your number plate online to get started.
